Nothing against Rooney’s nom. I enjoyed the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and her brave performance. I’m just here to do a little simple observation.

was thinking about this too…mostly when i saw TGWTDT (and i loved the movie, so nothing against it) and during some of the scene i was like “really-this isn’t NC-17? i feel like i’ve seen more more here than in Shame”
it just irks me b/c i know it’s all about male nudity vs. female nudity at the heart of it…but seriously-TGWTDT was more “shocking” as far as nudity goes IMO

I was thinking exactly the same thing when Rooney got her nomination. I mean hands down Rooney deserves it for Best Actress but for the Best Actor…that does disturb me with the whole female vs. male nudity. Dude we’re all naked just with clothes on, what’s the difference? Oh they don’t want a Best Actor to win for some guy who masturbates in a film most of the time? Jesus christ there’s FAR MORE TO IT THAN JUST THAT. Far more. AMPAS are wanks sometimes.

This is exactly the double standard that Michael was talking about all along in his Shame interviews…it’s ok for a woman to be completely naked on screen but if a man is showing his genitals that’s a big no-no, you get the big ol’ “scary” NC-17!

I’d also like to point out that the only major precursor that Mara had was the Globe nomination. In addition to the Volpi Cup and a Globe nom, Michael also won LAFCA, and had a BFCA and BAFTA nom. His snub is jarring, especially when held side-by-side to her nomination.

Moral of the story? It’s okay to sexually torture and/or objectify naked women. Appreciating the male form or studying compulsive (yet consensual) sexual behavior in a frank manner is a no-no.
